FAQs

What is Ubuntu?

To quote the Ubuntu website:

"Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. It is developed by a large community and we invite you to participate too!

The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Philosophy: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit."

What is the difference between Ubuntu and all those other ones?

Because Ubuntu is Open Source and all that jazz, people have taken the initiative to make variations of the original. The original Ubuntu uses the GNOME Desktop system. The Kubuntu variant uses the KDE Desktop, Xubuntu uses XFCE while Fluxbuntu and Nubuntu use Fluxbox. Nubuntu is also a security/network focussed variant. The names of the variants are linked in the Statistics box, so feel free to follow the links and find out more about them.

What is the point of this counter project?

The project is half novelty, half curiosity. The admin thought it would be fun to have a miniature version of The Linux Counter, especially for Ubuntu. Why? Because Ubuntu is so varied and it is nice to know what people prefer. It also gives the Ubuntu community something interactive and fun (ie the User buttons) and lets Ubuntu users proclaim their usage of the system they prefer.

Why is the User count less than the current Newest Ubuntu User?

Simple. Users can delete their accounts if they wish to, once they have stopped using Ubuntu (We don't know why, either!). Numbers are not re-used, as it defeats the purpose of the exercise.

Where can I find out more about Ubuntu?

The Ubuntu website is a good place to begin. There is also the Ubuntu Forums. For real-time conversation, feel free to join #ubuntu on irc.freenode.org.

If you want to see Ubuntu in action, take a look at Ubuntu Video.
